Our History

Involving four generations of the Hope family, funeral directors Hope & Sons Limited was founded in 1887 when John Hope entered into partnership with Alfred Wynn. In 1911 John Hope relinquished his interest in the partnership and began business on his own account in St Andrew Street in Dunedin.
William J Kinaston of Roxburgh joined Hope in 1915 and remained a partner until 1928. The company, however, continued trading as Hope & Kinaston Limited until 1960 when it changed to Hope & Sons Limited, reflecting the Hope family association with the firm.
The year 1970 saw the company move from St Andrew Street to its present site in Andersons Bay Road where it provides every facility for funerals, including a chapel, catering lounge, bereavement support services and continuing education programmes for the community.
